Born in the Clarence River district of NSW in
1874, Jack Marsh and brother Larry excelled as sprinters. Marsh was
rated fastest man in the state over 75 yards.
As a specialist fast bowler, he played six first class matches for NSW
in 1901-1903 even though people branded him a 'chucker', he took 34 wickets
for a 21.47 average.
He wasn't picked for an English tour because of his Aboriginality.
In 1902 the visiting Englishmen refused to play against him, but the 1903-1904
side did, Marsh took 5 for 55.
He was banned from the Sydney Cricket Ground and drifted into circus life
and then to petty crime.
Two men were acquitted of kicking him to death
in a street brawl in Orange (1916). The judge's astonishing comment was that
"Marsh may have deserved it."
