George Bracken was an Aboriginal boxer and was
Lightweight Champion for six years.
George Bracken was born George Brakenridge, at Palm Island, Queensland,
in 1934.
George became the Australian lightweight champion from 1956 to 1958 and then
again from 1959 to 1962. He had 59 fights, winning 42, drawing 2 and
losing 15. Bracken fought memorable battles against fellow Aboriginal
champions like Russell Sands and Gary Cowburn.
Later George Bracken was a singer, rock music composer and a television showman,
he spoke out strongly against the imprisonment of Aborigines in settlements
and missions and people who took advantage of Aboriginal boxers.
He now coaches young boxers in body boxing a sport in which no blows are allowed
to head.
