Gavin Wanganeen is an AFL (Australian Football
League) Aboriginal football player. He was born in Mt Gambier South
Australia in 1973 and began his AFL career in 1991.
This brilliant young man played 24 games for Port Adelaide and then moved
to AFL competition where he played 106 games with Essendon until the end
of 1995.
Since his involvement in AFL he as won a total of 12 awards. In 1991
he won Rookie of the Year and Essendon's Best First Year Player.
In 1992 he became a member of the All Australian team and followed this by
winning the Michael Tuck Medal and Brownlow Medal in 1993.
In 1994 his team also won the Fosters Cup Premiership, and in 1995 he again
became a member of the All Australian team. In 1997 he became the inaugural
Port Adelaide Captain and in 2001 his team achieved the Ansett Cup Premiership.
Wanganeen's greatest career achievement was winning the 1993 Brownlow Medal
ahead of Greg Williams (voted 18 to 17). The Brownlow Medal is awarded to
the Best and Fairest player of all the seasons matches. Wanganeen was
the first Aboriginal player to win the Brownlow Medal.
