Delma Smith was a field athlete, netballer, basketballer,
and volleyball player. Delma Smith was born in Queensland. She had
a lot of sporting achievements in her early years and was a very good athlete.
Smith's first achievement in sport was in 1977, when she won the Australian
Junior Long Jump Championships when she was only twelve! In 1987 she
toured the Cook Islands with an all-Aboriginal netball team.
During the mid 1980s Delma Smith became one of Australia's best volleyball
players. Later that year, she was selected for the senior national
side and played in the World Qualifying Championships. A strong, devoted
woman, Delma Smith was a rare asset as she was a left-handed spiker, considered
an advantage in this sport. At the end of her volleyball career, Smith
then turned to top basketball in Canberra.
In 1985, at the under-21 Volleyball Championships in Italy, Delma
Smith was voted Australia's best player.
