Catherine Freeman competes in athletics.
She is a brilliant track runner. Freeman was born in Mackay, Queensland in 1974. In 1989, she moved to Brisbane with her family for professional training, because from the age of eight, Freeman began winning state sprint championships. At sixteen years old, Freeman became the first Aboriginal athlete to win a track gold medal in the 4x100 metre relay at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games. Freeman represented Australia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and at the World Athletic Championships in Germany in 1993 and in Sweden in 1995. Freeman represented Australia in the Olympics in 2000, winning a gold medal in the 200 metres. She lit the Olympic torch at the Homebush stadium in the opening ceremony. Freeman won two golds and one silver medal at the 1994 Commonwealth games in Victoria, Canada. After her 400m win in 1994, she paraded both the Aboriginal and Australian flags on her victory lap, around the Track. |
