Early Life

* Sir William McMahon was born in Sydney.
* His parents died before he was twenty years old.
* Educated at Sydney Grammar School.
* He learnt about Law and Economics at Sydney University.
* McMahon served in the army in the World War II.
* William McMahon married Sonya Hopkins in 1965.

Achievements in Parliament

* In 1949 McMahon was elected when Robert Menzies went to power.
* In 1951 Sir William McMahon was a Minister for the Navy and the Air Force.
* In 1956 he became a Minister for Social Services.
* In 1958 he was a Minister Primary Industry.
* Minister for Labour and National Services, from December 1958.
* Harold Holt made McMahon Treasurer in 1966 and was Deputy Leader that year.
* In 1967 Harold Holt disappeared presumed drowned.
* In March 1971 McMahon elected Prime Minister.
* He lost the general election in 1972 to Labor's Gough Whitlam.
* Retired from politics in 1982 as member for Sydney Seat of Lowe.

1949 - 1982 Elected to the House of Representatives for Lowe, New South Wales.
1954 - 1956 Minister for Social Services.
1956 -1966 Minister for Primary Industry.
1969 - 1971 Minister for External (Foreign) Affairs.
1969 - McMahon won Deputy Leadership.
1971 - 1972 Prime Minister.
1982 - Retired 4th January.
1988 - Died of cancer on 31st March.
