Paul Keating

Early Life

* Paul Keating was born in Sydney on 18th January 1944.
* He went to school at De La Salle College in Bankstown where he was awarded the Intermediate Certificate in 1958.
* Keating left school at fifteen and joined the Australian Labour Party and in 1966 became President of the NSW Youth Council.
* In 1969 Paul Keating was elected to the House of Representatives as a representative for Blaxland, centred around the suburb of Bankstown where he had lived all his life.
* In 1975 he became the youngest ever federal Minister (he was thirty-three).
* Between 1976 and 1983 Paul Keating served in the Opposition Shadow Ministry and was spokesperson for a number of portfolios including agriculture, minerals and energy.
* During this time Keating was also President of NSW Branch of the ALP.

Achievements in Parliament


* In his late teens he was President of NSW Youth Council.
* After his years as President he was elected into the House of Representatives for Blaxland.
* He was elected Prime Minister in 1991, his biggest achievement.
* He reviewed the Sex Discrimination Act.
* Keating was responsible for deregulating the banking and telecommunications industries.
* Paul Keating was the first Prime Minister to say that Australia should be a republic.
* Paul Keating also took an active role in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

1944 - Paul Keating was born on the 18th of January.
1966 - Keating became President of the NSW Youth Council.
1969 - He was elected into the House of Representatives.
1975 - Keating became the youngest ever Federal Minister and was also married.
1978 to 1983 - He served in the Opposition Shadow Ministry.
1983 to 1991 - Keating was Treasurer.
1991 - Paul Keating was elected Prime Minister.
