The Early Life

* James Henry Scullin was born 18th September 1876, at Trawalla Victoria.
* He was the fifth of nine children to John Scullin and Ann Logan.
* Attended Trawalla Public School and Mt Rowan Public School.
* James's parents were Irish immigrants.
* Scullin was a natural public speaker and debater.
* Left school to work in a grocery store until he bought it in his mid 20's.

Achievements in Parliament

* James Scullin was the first Catholic to become an Australian Prime Minister.
* First Australian Prime Minister to come from an Irish background.
* The first Labor Prime Minister born in Australia.
* He became Prime Minister at a bad time, the beginning of the Great Depression.
* His government wanted to deal with the depression by helping the community. 
* Kept position as Prime Minister for three, long, hard years.
* Prime Minister from 22nd of October 1929 - 6th of January 1932.

1897 - Started at Oxford University.
1903 - Joined Labor Party.
1907-  Married Sarah McNamara
1910 - Member of House of Representatives.
1913 - Lost his seat in the House of Representatives.
1921 - Elected for member of Yarra.
1928 - Became leader of the party.
1929 - Became Prime Minister of Australia.
1935 - Resigned from Prime Minister.
1953 - Died.

Early Life

* His parents were John Scullin and Anne Logan, they migrated from Ireland.
* James Henry Scullin was born in Trawalla Victoria 1876 on the 18th of September.
* He went to Trawalla Public School and Mount Rowan Public School.
* James left school at 14 and had many jobs like farm hand, woodcutter, surface worker on a gold mine, grocery assistant and in a bakery.
* He was a founding member of the local Labor Party branch and became a full-time union organiser.
* From 1913 he spent the next few years as union organiser and editor of a Labor newspaper.

Achievements in Parliament

* He was first elected to Parliament  in 1910 for 3 years.
* He was re-elected to Parliament in 1921 for the Labor Party.
* He was the first Prime Minister to be a Catholic and have an Irish background.
* The Australian Broadcasting Commission was started under the Scullin.
* He insisted that Isaac Isaac should be appointed as the first Australian born Governor-General.
* In the Great Depression, all the plans for Labor Reform had to be left aside.
* The Bank of England demanded payment of its debts by massive spending cuts which slashed social services.
* He was defeated as Prime Minister in elections in 1931 by the United Australia Party.
* Scullin continued as leader of the Labor Party until 1935.
* He was very respected and worked devotedly for the Labor Party until his death in 1953.
