Early Life

* George Reid was born in 1845 in Scotland.
* He moved to Melbourne in 1852.
* He left school to work as a clerk but at the age of 19 he had responsibility in the Colonial Treasury.
* In 1878 he was the Secretary of the Crown Law Office.
* He became a Barrister then went to NSW Legislative Assembly.

Achievements In Parliament

* He became a member of East Sydney in 1880 in the NSW Parliament.
* Minister for Public Instruction setting up High Schools and Technical Colleges.
* As Premier of NSW he opposed Federation.
* In 1901 he was elected to Commonwealth Government with the support of N.S.W. Free Traders.
* 1904 George became Prime Minister.
* Reid lost control of Government to Deakin in 1905.
* He remained in Parliament as Leader of the Opposition.
* Reid resigned from Parliament in 1908.
