Banksia
(Banksia ericifolia)

Preparation : Soak the flowers in water over night then you roll them between your hands. 

Uses Food/Drink : Makes a drink that has a honey flavour. 

Other uses : Dried cones are put in fires as they burn for a long time.


Bracken Fern
(Pteridium esculentum) 

Preparation : Plant roots were dug up, pounded and roasted.

Uses Food/Drink : Made a type of bread.
 
 

Burrawang
(Macrozamia communis)

Preparation : The kernels are soaked in water for 7-8 days to get the poison out. Then it is brought out of the river and roasted in a fire. 

Uses Food/Drink : It would have been a nice meal when it was cold. The food is similar to roasted chestnuts.

 

Grass Tree
(Xanthorrhoea australis)

Preparation : This plant was used in several ways either eaten raw or prepared. Seeds from the flower were ground to make flour.

Uses Food/Drink : The bottom end of the shoots are chewed to give you a drink and to relieve thirst. The nectar of the flower can also be eaten.

Other uses : The long stalks or stems that grows from the middle of the plant were used to made spear shafts. The resin at the base of the plant was heated and used as a glue for spear heads etc.
 

 

Lillypilly
(Eugenia smithii)

Preparation : Fruit was picked when ripe.

Uses Food/Drink : Fruit eaten raw.
 
 

 

Mountain Devil
 (Lambertia formosa)

Preparation : Red flowers picked and sucked.

Uses Food/Drink : Honey extract but too many can produce a headache and nausea.
 

Pigface
(Carpobrotus glaucescens)

Preparation : Pick fleshy fruit when ripe.

Use Food/Drink : The centre was squeezed out into the mouth by hand.


Geebung
(Persoonia pinifolia)

Preparation : Pulp was squeezed from skin and seed.

Use Food/Drink : Outer flesh of the fruit was eaten raw.
 

Tea Tree
(Leptospermum scoparium)

Preparation : Pick the leaves.

Use Food/Drink : Put in hot water to produce a flavoured beverage.
 

 

Long Leaf Wattle
(Acacia longifolia)

Preparation : Pick the seed pods.

Use Food/Drink : long yellow wattle.

Uses Other : The green unripe seeds were used as a substitute for soap. For fishing, the seed pods when crushed were thrown into pools of water which removed oxygen from the water & fish would float to the surface.
 


Flat-stemmed Wattle.
(Acacia complonata)

Preparation : Pick seed pod.

Uses Food/Drink : Seeds of plant were edible and ground to make flour.

Uses other : Fibre from branches were used for making rope bags, traps etc.
