The President's Chain on display. We now have a Mayor.

By Eliza

On Monday the 14th of May,  5/6T walked to Warringah Council, when we arrived we had recess.

After recess we met our tour guide came, his name was Allen. He took us inside and showed us the pictures of the past Mayors then took us to see a model of Dee Why.

After that we went to the Council Meeting Room and talked about our three governments. Then we watched a video that showed us what local governments do for us. We had a debate and got to sit in the councilors seats. The Mayor came for the debate, it was about a theme park on Dee Why Lagoon. I was on the negative side, we won and the Mayor decided.

After our debate we got a folder with information on the council, after that we walked back to school. We had learned a lot about what Warringah Council does for us.

The Mayor, Peter Moxham.

On Monday the 14th of May, 5/6T walked to the Warringah Council.

Our guide, Allen came and took us inside and we looked at pictures of all the Mayors of the past. They used to be called Shire Presidents.  Then we had a short break then went and saw a model of Dee Why.

Allen took us to a room where the councilors and the Mayor argue over issues and the newspapers make headlines and things. Allen asked us questions and we asked Allen questions too.

We watched a video for half an hour about what governments do that's special. Then our class argued about an issue which was should we build a theme park called 'Beach World' at Dee Why Lagoon. The result was no.

We all learned what our governments and councils do. We had a great day.

On the 14th of May, 5/6T went to Warringah Council in Dee Why.

When we went in, there was a man called Allen our guide. He led us into a hall where there were photos of all the Mayors, he also asked us about some of them. We also went to see the badges and the chain that the Mayor wears on special occasions.

After that we went into the Council Chamber and had a debate about whether or not to build a theme park on Dee Why Lagoon. We had to play special roles, there were 4 journalists, 9 councilors, 3 speakers in favour, 3 speakers in against and a general manager. The mayor Peter Moxham also came and ran the debate for us. There was also a lady who came and took photos of us for the Manly Daily.

First the mayor read the sheet to us about the Theme Park on Dee Why Lagoon, then we started on the debate. We started off with the speaker against who was Jenny and then Marko who was the speaker in favour.

At the end the against side won, it was also a wonderful debate. We all learned something about our local council. It provides such things as immunization for children, meals on wheels, garbage collection, etc.
