Sydney City behind the Botanical Gardens.
By Eliza
On Thursday the 30th of August 4/5G and 5/6T went to the Botanical Gardens. When we arrived we went to Government House. After Government House we walked through the Gardens to go to the Art Gallery. On the way to the Art Gallery we saw thousands of fruit bats in the trees there was so many that it looked like they were hanging fruit.
After the Art Gallery we went back to the Botanical Gardens and had lunch. Mr Taylor showed us a fig tree he said that the bats eat the figs and that there were a lot of fig trees in the botanical gardens. After that we went and saw a vegetable garden on one side there was Aboriginal food and on the other side there vegetables like we eat.
Then we walked around a bit more then walked down to the wall beside Sydney Harbor and got a photo with everyone in it, (it was so fun). Next saw the Cactus Garden there were lots of types of cactus.
Inside there was also a train inside the garden and everybody got in it so Mr Taylor took a photo of us.
Lastly we went to see an almost extinct tree called the Wollemi Pine it was also around when the dinosaurs were in Australia.
We walked back to where we were to catch the bus and
went back to school.

On the 30th of August, Brookvale Public School Years 4, 5 and 6 went the Botanical Gardens. Before we went to see the gardens, we had our lunch.
We went through a part of the gardens that was very dark, covered with trees. There were thousands of Flying Foxes that we saw. Our teacher explained that they were feeding on the figs from the fig trees.
We also saw some vegetables that grew there too. It was considered to be the first place where the English people from the First Fleet tried to grow some food, but they were not successful. Our teacher also told us that the Australian trees had really hard timber to cut, and the English people weren't used to cutting hardwood and found it really difficult to get timber and clear the land for farming.
Some trees were endangered or rare, and some were kept in cages because people tried to steal the trees for their own gardens. One tree that we saw was the Wollemi Pine Tree. It was almost extinct because it existed when the dinosaurs were on Earth. There are only about 100 trees of the same species still living. The tree was kept in a cage so nobody would damage it in any way. We also saw a endangered specie of a cactus that was also in a cage. We walked along a path and we took a photo of our classes on a little train.
I had a lot of fun, and I really hope our school can go there next year. It was very educational and we learnt about a lot of things in a fun way. I hope that everyone enjoyed participating in the excursion, and I also hope that everyone also learnt something.
A cockatoo joined us for lunch.
