Reconciliation Day

By Joseph

On the 26th of May started a special week called Reconciliation Week. It's about saying sorry about because of the things the British did to the Aboriginal people when they settled in Australia.

To show that we were sorry an estimated 250 000 people walked over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A skywriter plane wrote SORRY in the sky.

John Howard the Prime Minister refused to walk and didn't say sorry, he said it was something that happened a long time ago that he was not responsible, therefore he should not say sorry! Many people there booed him.

Lots of other prime ministers walked though, and every school is making part of a banner for reconciliation.

On May the 26th Reconciliation Week started. Many things happened on that day such as People gave up all there time to walk on the Harbour Bridge to show that we are sorry to all the aboriginal people.

The year 6 reading group read a part in the newspaper that had two ladies holding hands. One of the ladies was an Aboriginal lady and she was told her great uncle was one of the people that was killed and the other lady was apologizing to the aboriginal lady because her family were some of the people that were killing them. That's so sad.

I learnt a lot about Reconciliation Day and to treat others kindly.
