Getting ready for a vote

By Annalisa

Last week two people from the Australian Electoral Office named Barbara and Nicole came to our class to talk to us about elections. The Electoral Office is a place where people do lots of work to organize elections and  referendums.

First they showed us a video about what we were going to do. We were in an imaginary country called Paradise, we where going to be split into three states called Health, Wealth and Happiness, I was in Health. We had to have an Referendum about if we wanted to let the Government help with a pollution problem or not. All the people except 1 person in our state said yes they wanted the Governments help.

The states of Wealth and Happiness had different problems.

To decide who or what wins, you have to fill out a form on who or what you want to win. After you fill in your form you put it in a box. Once all the forms are put in the box people count the forms.

Getting the ballet papers

This term Barbara and Nicole of the Electoral Office in Manly visited our school twice. We learnt about voting and referendums.

We watched 2 movies about how they voted years ago. We watched a movie about elections too. We practised filling the ballot papers too, it was really fun doing elections and learning a lot of stuff about it.

A referendum is finding out when the population of a country has to make a decision 'yes or no', to let the government do something. There were 3 groups of States, and they were. The groups were called Health, Happiness and Wealth. I was with my friends in the Happiness Group.

The Electoral Office is a place which organizes elections and referendums for the government.
