Book Week 2000

Class books always on display in the Library

By Joseph

During Book Week the Library teacher Mrs. Neill was reading all the short listed books to our classes, we had to have a vote of which we thought was the best. It was out of Buffy an Adventure Story, Jenny Angel, Great Bear, Luke's Way of Looking and Memorial. Buffy won, but only in our class.

Also David Legge came to our school and was showing us all sorts of things, he showed how he made Bamboozled. One day he was at home thinking and looked at a chandelier and imagined it had flowers instead of light bulbs, and showed us some of his original sketches of the pictures in Bamboozled.

Then he drew a pot, and asked for suggestions of animals for a pot, I said bird, but there still heaps of other suggestions, the original one he made was an elephant.

A few weeks after David Legge's visit we had to do a report on one of the short listed books, I chose buffy because it was my favourite. I think Book Week is one of the best weeks in the year.

Book Reviews

The Great Bear

Author : Libby Gleeson

Illustrator : Armon Greeder

Book Review - By Jarrod

Characters : The Circus Bear.

Plot : It is quite a sad story. The bear is kept in a circus to dance. It is treated real bad and the audience sometimes enjoys him and sometimes throw rocks etc.  The last 10 pages are just pictures and to me it looks like he's committing suicide and that's why it is sad.

On the last page you can see him jumping off a pole into the stars which I think is called the great bear.

Recommendation : I give this book a 7/10 and I recommend this book for 9 years and up.

Memorial

Author : Gary Crew.

Book Review by Fine

Characters : Great grandpa, Issy Jacobs, two Nurses, Grandpa, Great Grandma, Philly Whipps. Ruby, The Unknown Soldier, Geez, Barber, Mother, Father and the doctors.

Plot : His grandpa one day talked about the war. He told the little boy that the sun was too bright for an old fella. Philly Whipps wheeled himself and had lost his legs to shrapnel. They said were you at Vietnam and he said yes.

Recommendation : I think it is a really great book and I think it is suitable for 11 years to 16 years of age.

Buffy an Adventure Story

Author :  Bob Graham

Characters : The characters of this book are a magician called Brilo, the main character
Buffy and someone who adopts Buffy called Mary Kelly.

Plot : Buffy lived with Brilo and performed with him. He could do many tricks and everyone started to like Buffy more than Brilo. Brilo got jealous and kicked Buffy out to depend on himself. Buffy goes many places and survives a few close calls with the dog catcher. Finally she finds a family with Mary Kelly.

I recommend a reading age of 4-11 years old and give it a rating of 8/10.

Jenny Angel

Author : Margaret Wild

Characters : Jenny Angel, Davey, Mum

Plot : Davey was Jenny's brother and he was very sick and couldn't go to school. So everyday Jenny would go to Davey's class and see who sitting next to who and what songs they were singing. When she got home she told him all about what she had seen at school that day. Jenny was very sad when her brother died. Jenny and her Mum sat on the roof one last time, and thought about Davey and how much they were going to miss him.

Recommendation : Kindergarten to age 12.
